Hypervigilance: The Effect of Childhood Trauma on Adult Second Language Acquisition

Presenter: Andrew Galuskin

This webinar explores the impact of hypervigilance, often rooted in childhood trauma, on adult second language learning acquision in ASL learning environments. Drawing on his master’s research, Andrew Galuskin shares insights into how these psychological factors can influence language learning, classroom participation, and performance. Participants will leave with a new perspective on ASL pedagogy and practical strategies for fostering a more supportive, trauma-informed, and resilient learning environment for all ASL students.

Resources and Techniques for Teaching About Audism

Presenter: Dr. Edward Bart

One of the difficulties of teaching the topic of audism is the limited amount of classroom resources. This workshop discusses the resources that exist already as well as strategies for collecting resources that can be applied to the topic of audism. Dr. Bart will also share strategies he has used to foster students’ use of critical thinking skills and perspective-shifting to understand the concepts associated with audism such as ethnocentrism and the Social Model of Disability.

But I Already Taught That! Teaching ASL with the Brain in Mind

Presenter: Alli Bloom

Have you ever taught a sign, classifier, or grammar concept, only to find that students struggle to remember or apply it later? This interactive session explores how the brain learns and what this means for teaching ASL. Participants will examine key ideas from neuroscience, including attention, memory, neuroplasticity, and more, to consider how these processes influence ASL learning. Through discussion and reflection, educators will explore ways to design ASL instruction that honors how the brain learns and support more meaningful and lasting learning for students.

Signing Through the Screen: Teaching ASL on Zoom 

Presenter: Dr. Katie Moore

Teaching American Sign Language in a virtual environment presents unique opportunities and challenges, particularly when visual access, student engagement, and interaction are central to language learning. This workshop explores effective strategies for teaching ASL on Zoom, with a focus on maximizing visual clarity, fostering student participation, and maintaining linguistic integrity in an online setting. Participants will examine best practices for camera setup, classroom management, and interactive activities, as well as techniques for providing feedback and assessing student performance remotely. Drawing on practical experience and pedagogical principles, this session offers adaptable tools and ideas for both new and experienced ASL instructors seeking to enhance their online teaching.

Our webinar organizer will distribute the Zoom link 12-24 hours prior to the webinar session.

If you have registered but are unable to attend the webinar, you can be provided with a link to the Zoom recording. However, you will not be able to get a certificate of attendance or ASLTA CEUs if you are not present for the webinar.

Please allow for up to two weeks for processing of ASLTA CEUs and certificates of attendance after a webinar.

ASLTA webinars are scheduled for Eastern Standard Time. Please remember to check the corresponding time zone for your part of the country to ensure you attend accordingly. 

Zoom ID and Password
  • All registrants will receive the Zoom link, meeting number, and password 24 hours before the webinar is scheduled to begin.
  • If you registered for a webinar and have not received the Zoom information, please contact pd@aslta.org immediately. Include your first and last name in the email subject line. 
Refund Policy
  1. Registrants who do not attend the scheduled webinar will not receive a refund.
  2. Registrants may receive a 50% refund of webinar fees if cancellation is made at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled webinar.
  3. A 15% processing fee is applied to all refunds.
  4. Refunds will be made via check and mailed to you within 10 business days.

  1. It is strongly recommended that you use a laptop or desktop computer to connect to the webinar.
  2. Tablet devices are not recommended for ASLTA webinars, as all Zoom features may not be available on a tablet.
