Qualifications: 
Any Bachelor’s degree and two years experience in the discipline OR – Any Associate’s degree and six years experience in the discipline OR – A current California Community College Credential that permits full-time service as an instructor in American Sign Language OR – The equivalent. Certain combinations of education, experience, and other accomplishments in the field may be judged as equal to the stated minimum qualifications for these positions. Candidates who feel they possess such equivalent qualifications must request and submit an APPLICATION FOR EQUIVALENCE form. Supporting documents must be included with the completed form. AND – A demonstrated sensitivity to students with diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds and students with disabilities. Note: Degrees and credits must be from accredited institutions (Title V Section 53406). Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an evaluation service.
Compensation Range: 
$47,484.95 - $76,591.27 per year

Description: 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Near-Native fluency in American Sign Language
  • Teaching experience in American Sign Language at the community college or university level
  • Evidence of teaching ASL using an immersion style curriculum
  • Knowledge of curriculum development in American Sign Language, including Deaf people, deafness and its impact upon Deaf people, Deaf culture and community, and familiarity with current literature related to Deaf culture and ASL linguistics
  • Knowledge of instructional technology used with American Sign Language
  • Demonstrated involvement with the Deaf community
  • Evidence of effective organizational skills, writing skills, and communication skills
  • Commitment to become involved in the daily affairs, growth, and coordination of the department and participation in campus affairs
  • Perform other duties consistent with faculty job description as stated in the faculty contract.

  • Maintaining subject matter currency;

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in related field
  • Certification from a professional organization such as ASLTA, RID, or other related group
